We can also assess problems such as toothache or damaged teeth and explain whether general, emergency or restorative treatment is needed.

A dental check-up includes an examination of your teeth, gums and bite, checks for early signs of decay and gum disease, and an oral cancer screen. X-rays are taken only when they’re clinically useful, such as when an area can’t be properly assessed by sight alone.

Most people benefit from a dental check-up every six to 12 months, which is what the Australian Government advises (via Healthdirect). If you have gum disease, a high decay risk or a history of dental work, your dentist may suggest coming in more often. We’ll tell you what suits your mouth rather than applying a blanket rule.

Teeth cleaning, also called a “scale and clean”, shouldn’t hurt. It can feel a little sensitive if your gums are inflamed or it’s been a while since your last visit. Let us know if an area is tender, and we’ll adjust.

No, your dentist will only take dental X-rays when they need information that can’t be obtained through an examination alone, or when you don’t have recent scans (typically within the last two years). We reserve emergency dentist appointments at the start and end of each day, Monday to Thursday. While we always do our best to see you as soon as possible, we cannot guarantee a same-day appointment. Availability depends on the day and how urgent your problem is.

For an adult tooth, pick it up by the crown and avoid touching the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly in milk without scrubbing. Gently place it back into the socket if you can, or keep it in milk or in your cheek. Contact a dentist immediately, as the chances of saving a knocked-out tooth are highest in the first one to two hours.

Never put a knocked-out baby tooth back into its socket.

If you have spreading facial swelling, a fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go straight to a hospital emergency department or call 000. Swelling that has moved towards your eye or neck also needs hospital care.

In-chair teeth whitening in Perth usually takes about an hour in a single appointment, while take-home kits work gradually over one to two weeks. Results vary depending on your teeth and the type of staining.

No, teeth whitening only works on natural enamel. It won’t change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. If you plan to have several cosmetic treatments, your dentist may recommend teeth whitening first to ensure the later crowns and veneers are shaded to match.

Purely cosmetic work is not usually covered by health funds. Treatments with a health or restorative purpose may be eligible for a rebate under some extras policies, and Invisalign may be eligible under orthodontic cover. Invisalign treatment can finish in several months or run well over a year. The time varies depending on how far your teeth need to move and how consistently you wear your aligners. Wearing your aligners for the recommended 20–22 hours per day makes a real difference.

Root canal treatment removes infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth, then cleans and seals the root canal system so the tooth can be retained. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic. Depending on the tooth and infection, it may take one or two appointments, including sealing and filling the affected tooth.

Dental implants are intended as a long-term solution to replace missing teeth, but there is no guaranteed lifespan. How long an implant lasts depends on factors including oral hygiene, general health and regular dental reviews. The crown attached to the implant may also need maintenance or replacement over time.

All-On-4® is an innovative dental implant system developed by Nobel Biocare that uses four strategically positioned dental implants to support a fixed full arch of replacement teeth. It may be considered when most or all teeth in an arch need replacing.
